Discussion Guidelines

ThinkYouthMinistry isn’t just a place for us to talk—we want to hear your ideas, reactions, and thoughts as well! We encourage you to submit your thoughts about TYM posts in the comment section. We read all comments and publish some that we feel are representative of the various viewpoints submitted to us.

What sort of comments are we looking for? In our view, a good comment has the following qualities:

  • specifically relevant to the issues or questions raised by the original post
  • reasonably short and concise
  • friendly and polite in tone and language (even if you’re commenting on something with which you strongly disagree)
  • contributes something positive and new to the topic

On the flip side, there are some things you’ll definitely want to avoid in your comments:

  • off-topic
  • argumentative or angry tone of language
  • contribute nothing new or positive to the discussion (this is an important one—if you’re posting just to criticize an idea, consider rewriting your comment to be more constructive or simply refraining)
  • overly long or otherwise difficult to read (if your comment is longer than the original post, consider shortening it for readability)
  • arguing with other commenters (debates or lengthy discussions with other commenters are best taken to another forum or a personal blog)
  • dominating the discussion (once you’ve said your piece, sit back and allow others to contribute as well. If you find yourself posting more than once or twice a day, consider setting up a blog of your own—there are many great free blog tools out there!)

For more thoughts on what makes for a good comment, take a look at the guidelines at GoodComment.com.

We appreciate alternate viewpoints; you’re just as welcome to submit comments that politely disagree with us as agree with us.

We hold ourselves to these same standards when posting comments of our own. What it all boils down to is being polite, courteous, and Christ-like in the way we communicate online. If you have particular questions about the comment or moderation policy, don’t hesitate to contact us.
