The Importance of Unity

So my wife and I are sitting watching the Drew Marshall interview on 100 Huntley Street and anticipating as many had said about a “divisive conversation aimed to separate us”. I did not see that personally but became aware that we do look for these things and in times when correction is needed choose to rather call it “Division” rather then correction. I say that very mindful that in our church culture there are a great many forms of division within teams of ministry as well as in the body.
As youth leaders/workers/pastors how are we effectively teaching this to students who are seeing in consistently?
I am aware of this in how I operate as a leader but also realize that it (division) does not always show up in action, but can be a state of mind, operating in our minds and hearts and shaping our attitudes.
Consider what Paul meant when he wrote this to the Philippian church. “Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose”. (Philippians 4:2)
In light of this let’s ask two questions: Does God call us to unity, does God bless unity? If the answer to these two is yes, then what is the outcome of division?
As we lead this generation to one day leading their generation are we instilling in their lives the importance of keeping together, being united. “United we stand, divided we fall” remember that catchy quote, my guess is it is true.
Let us all take a challenge from Gandhi “Unity to be real must stand the severest strain without breaking.”
